How the Threshold Works
The salary must be your gross annual salary as stated in your employment contract. This includes base salary and guaranteed bonuses. It does not include variable bonuses, stock options, or benefits in kind.
The threshold is based on multiples of the SMIC (France's minimum wage). When SMIC increases, thresholds increase automatically. The 2026 SMIC was set at €1,823.03/month gross.
What Counts Toward the Threshold
Included: Base salary, 13th month salary (if contractual), guaranteed annual bonuses, housing allowance (if contractual).
Not included: Variable performance bonuses, stock options, relocation packages, meal vouchers (tickets restaurant), company car.
IT Professionals: Special Considerations
Unlike Germany, France does not have a reduced threshold for IT workers without degrees. You need either a relevant degree or equivalent professional experience at the €39,582 level. However, France's threshold is already significantly lower than Germany's IT-specific Blue Card threshold (€45,934).

Should You Choose France Based on Salary?
✅ Best if: Your offer is €39,582–€45,000 — you qualify for France but not Germany.
❌ Avoid if: You earn €71,000+ — Netherlands' 30% tax ruling would give you higher take-home pay.
