March 31, 2026·Verified from official sources

Canada = permanent residency, no job offer, 7 months. Germany = cheapest fees (€175), fastest PR (21 months). UK = most expensive (£8,700+ over 5 years), slowest to settlement. For 2026, Germany and Canada beat the UK on almost every metric.

Canada: best system, hardest to score high enough

Canada's Express Entry is the most transparent immigration system in the world. You know exactly where you stand because everything is points-based. No employer needed, no luck involved — if your CRS score is above the cutoff, you get invited.

The challenge: CRS cutoffs have been high. General Federal Skilled Worker draws have been rare in 2025-2026. Most invitations come through category-based draws or Provincial Nominee Programs. If your CRS is below 470, you'll likely need a PNP nomination (which adds 600 points).

Best for: Highly educated applicants with strong English scores and 3+ years of experience. Especially strong if you qualify for a PNP or a category-based draw (healthcare, STEM, French speakers).

Cost reality: CAD $1,525 in government fees, plus ~$1,500 in supporting costs (IELTS, WES, medical, police clearance). Total: ~$3,000.

Germany: cheapest, but you need a job offer

Germany's EU Blue Card is the most affordable path to permanent residence in a major economy. Total government fees: just EUR 175 (€75 visa + €100 residence permit). Compare that to Canada's $1,525 or the UK's £769-£1,618.

The catch: you need a job offer with a salary of at least EUR 50,700 (or €45,934.20 for shortage occupations like IT, engineering, healthcare). Without a job offer, you can use the new Opportunity Card to enter Germany and search for work — but that requires at least A1 German or B2 English and a points-based evaluation.

The PR timeline is remarkably fast: 21 months with B1 German language skills, or 27 months with A1 German. That's significantly faster than the UK's 5-year requirement.

Best for: IT professionals, engineers, and healthcare workers who can secure a job offer. The Blue Card is available even without a degree for IT specialists with 2+ years of experience.

Cost reality: EUR 175 in government fees, plus ~EUR 200 for credential recognition if needed. Total: under €400. By far the cheapest path.

UK: fastest processing, but most expensive

The UK Skilled Worker visa is processed in just 3 weeks from outside the UK — dramatically faster than Canada (7 months) or Germany (3-6 months). If speed matters, the UK wins.

But it's expensive. The visa fee alone is £769-£1,618 depending on duration. Then add the Immigration Health Surcharge: £1,035 per person per year, paid upfront. A 3-year visa for one person costs £769 + £3,105 (IHS) = £3,874 before you even count flights and deposits.

You need a job offer from an approved sponsor — there are currently 121,074 licensed sponsors in the UK, so finding one is realistic. The salary threshold is £41,700 or the going rate for your occupation, whichever is higher.

⚠️ UK visa fees increase on April 8, 2026. If you're applying soon, submit before that date to save £50-£99.

Best for: People who already have a UK job offer and want to move quickly. The 3-week processing time is unmatched.

Cost reality: £3,874+ for a single 3-year visa (fee + IHS). Family of three: £10,000+. The most expensive of the three by far.

Which should you choose?

Choose Canada if: You have strong English, a bachelor's degree or higher, and 3+ years of skilled work experience. You don't need a job offer, and you get permanent residence immediately upon arrival.

Choose Germany if: You have a job offer (or are willing to job search), want the cheapest path, and are open to learning German. The 21-month PR timeline is the fastest of the three.

Choose the UK if: You already have a UK job offer from a licensed sponsor and want the fastest processing time. Be prepared for the highest total costs.

Choose Canada if: No job offer, strong CRS, want PR immediately.

Choose Germany if: Have a job offer, want cheapest path + fastest PR in Europe.

⚠️ **Choose UK only if:** You specifically need London or your occupation has limited opportunities elsewhere.

The UK is hard to justify in 2026: £8,700 over 5 years, £1,035/year health surcharge, 5 years to ILR. [Ireland offers the same language at a fraction of the cost →](/blog/ireland-critical-skills-permit-2026-guide).
